We’ve all heard of the monstrous movies known as Star Wars but if you lead a regular life and tend not to get caught up in the world of nerd then you may have not heard the news awhile ago about the acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney. Purchased for 4.05 billion dollars the internet semi-exploded with wonderful nerd news when the announcement was made that Disney had plans to expand the Star Wars universe by producing the next installment in the ongoing saga. Better known as episode 7. But with all the negative press from episodes 1 (The Phantom Menance), 2 (The Clone Wars) and 3 (Revenge of the Sith) hardcore fans are weary about what the future holds and what direction the latest movie will go. Over the next few years you’ll arguably here hundreds of ideas and plots thrown your way but more importantly lets talk about how not to screw up Star Wars 7.

Star Wars 7 Plot Ideas

You’ll here about ideas and rumors surrounding the plot for time to come leading up to the first official trailer but let’s get this started off on the right track. Continue the story. I’m well aware of the Star Wars expanded universe (more on this in a bit) but when it comes to the end of Return of the Jedi and the death of Darth Vader I’ve always wanted to know what happens next. Do the Jedi return to prominence? What happens to the remaining sith and Empire?

How Not To Screw Up Star Wars 7Bring back Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, C-3PO, R2-D2, and of course Han Solo. I’m not asking for these guys to be featured as the main characters (they are pretty old after all) but let us know what happened to them in cameo appearances if necessary. Not knowing what happened with Luke Skywalker or the rest of the crew in movie would be a huge let down for the first episode following their story line (think Thrawn Trilogy).

With that said about the movies original characters lets not have any reference to characters from episodes 1,2, or 3 (unless it’s Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker). One of the biggest problems I had with the prequels was the “childish” feel it had surrounding them. Jar Jar Binks for example. At times it felt as if they were trying to appeal a younger audience as opposed to actually making a good movie. Of all time annoying movie characters, Jar Jar Binks is got to be at the top of the list.

Of course with Jar Jar Binks to be involved in any of those movies CG animation had to be used, something that wasn’t even known when the original Star Wars began. Perhaps that’s what made it so special. Look at something so small as the Millennium Falcon which wasn’t computer animated but felt like an actual heap of junk (as Luke mentioned) with it’s incredible set design. It’s amazing to say considering how much older the originals were to the prequels but episodes 4,5 and 6 felt a lot more believable then the prequels because there was far to much CG involved in the prequels.

Will Disney Do a Good Job With Star Wars 7

When I hear the word Disney the first thing that pops into my head is Mickey Mouse. I’m sure a lot of you think the same. I’m not a huge entertainment buff by any mean so I don’t know who owns what but when I heard the news of Disney purchasing Lucasfilm and planned to produce new Star Wars movies I cringed a little. What I didn’t know is that it was Disney behind Marvel Comics and the amazing success of such films like The Avengers, Iron Man etc. I know I’ve been very surprised at the pleasure of those movies and when I heard that held out hope that Disney would do a good job when it came production of the latest Star Wars movie.

Joss Wheldon For Star Wars 7The first thing that needs to be done is a solid script. Disney has plans on making two trilogy sequels (7,8,9 & 10,11,12) in the future. Needless to say a lot of time to to sit down and think about some wonderful plot lines. The best thing about Star Wars is it’s expanded universe, I won’t go into great detail because, well, I could be talking for days. Games, novels, comics etc are all just a few of the wonderful things that have been made to explore on the lore of the Star Wars Universe.

As equally as important as a good script is a good director. Talk has already begun on who’s going to get hired and one of those names is Joss Wheldon (pictured). As much of a fan I am of what Christopher Nolan did with the Batman trilogy I’m a little hesitant to see what would happen with the Star Wars universe if it turned a little darker. If you’re not familiar with Wheldon he directed The Avengers and if your a sci-fi nut like me he was part of the TV series Firefly which to this day is still a cult hit.

So Much Possibility

This can go a lot of ways and while I was nervous about what Disney would do I have full faith they’re going to make a good trilogy surrounding the Star Wars universe. While I want to see the main characters (Luke, Leia, Han etc) involved in some form I agree with most in saying their time has past and cameos is the right plan of action going forward. Think mentors. The easiest way on how not to screw up star wars 7 is to not have anything surrounding the prequels involved. George Lucas, Jar Jar Binks, explanations about Midi-chlorians etc should all be banned and forgotten and we need to be headed down a path post Thrawn Trilogy (I only say that because our characters are to friggin old). While still along time away a lot will take place between now and the scheduled 2015 release. Hopefully hiring the right director (not Michael Bay) and some subtle script hints will follow. I have faith Disney, now don’t disappoint my nerdy life!
